Feeling lost and frustrated with cases can be a regular part of a clinician’s experience of work when they are not receiving supervision or consultation from a more seasoned clinician. It could be that you feel like you are questioning your future in a field that feels isolative and demanding. Or perhaps you are feeling disheartened by the lack of true support that your place of work provides their staff. Maybe you are in private practice yourself and are missing the opportunity to collaborate with other clinicians on cases that feel more challenging.
Wherever you are in your journey, it leaves you feeling disheartened and wondering if this field that you feel so passionate about is the right fit for you.
It’s okay to want more support .
Your feelings of frustration can melt into more clarity on difficult cases. You will be able to navigate challenging clinical situations with more confidence. You can find a sense of empowerment in discovering who you really are as a clinician. You will feel more grounded in your work as a therapist.
As a counselor myself, I approach supervision differently than other supervisors. I approach each supervisee or consultation as indivudally unique cases. There is no cookie-cutter way to support therapists, it varies person to person. As a supervisor, it is my job to meet each counselor where they are at in their development journey and gently guide and bestow information as needed.
In supervision or consultation sessions together, we will spend some time getting to know one another and paint a picture of what your experience as a practitioner in the field has been. We may explore differential diagnoses, different theoretical approaches, countertransference, cultural expectations, and explore different ways to navigate difficult conversations. Therapy is a really unique blend of art and science and together we will help you find what approaches feel true to you and how you can best support your clients.
Each session, you will come prepared with questions or cases that you would like to discuss in our time together. We will work together to try to solve where you feel stuck so that you can grow through your problems. I may share my perspective on an issue or we may spend time helping you to trust your own clinical skills.
Whether you are a provisionally licensed clinician or a fully licensed clinician, it’s okay to want more support for yourself as you navigate your work.

FAQS
What others have wondered about seeking individualized supervision and consultation.
-
Receiving supervision or clinical consultation your place of employment is a great option for many people. However, provisionally licensed folx can feel frustrated by the lack of individual attention they receive, feel conflicted by the power dynamics if their supervisor is also their boss, or they may get paired with a more seasoned clinician that does not specialize in similar areas. It can be great to expand your support and consider a mentor outside of your place of employment so you can get support truly tailored to your needs as a developing clinician.
-
Yes, this supervision counts as hours towards your LCPC. Seeking supplemental clinical supervision while you are provisionally licensed clinician can be a great way to get support and to develop your clinical skills.
-
If we are working together while you are at a separate employer, I will not be able to access your notes and cannot sign off on them each week.
-
At this time, LCPC’s are not able to provide hours to count towards the LCSW in the state of IL. However, I am able to support LSW’s/ LCSW’s in a supplemental supervisory relationship, if desired.
